iUniverse Presents: 'Middle Management Is Murder' "I've been promoted to middle management. I never thought I'd sink so low." -- Tim Gould
EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- John Robinson, a boot-wearing ex-cowboy from New Mexico with power in his pen, has unexpectedly received what appears to be the "promotion of a lifetime" in the communications department of Heinlein Inc., makers of Sasha premium vodka. Why the promotion? His cantankerous boss Paul McDermott succumbs to an assassin's dead-on bullet following a tumultuous press conference. The bloody beginnings of "Middle Management Is Murder," a story about sinister underworld connections to an international food and liquor conglomerate, "career-minded/ladder-climbing" corporate pawns, and Robinson's quest to track down the perpetrator of this "corporate misdeed."
But speechwriter Robinson is not alone in his sleuthing within the pages of "Middle Management Is Murder" (published by iUniverse). Enter Marcia Alberghetti, the sexy and very "capable" administrative assistant who has made it known within the office circles that her new bosses' work will be her top priority. The fires of office romance get stoked while Robinson and Alberghetti set out to solve the crime. Together they uncover some surprising information about his ex-boss' past, including rumors of questionable sexual dealings and a secret, longtime friendship with a Rev. Baldwin T. Blackman, community activist and New York City mayoral candidate. Then before you can say "Three martini lunch!" another colleague turns up dead. After the police name Alberghetti as prime suspect for both murders, Robinson attempts to clear his lover's name. But both their lives are at risk as they learn of a drug and prostitute ring operating from within the corporate boardroom. Deadly, fun and insightful, "Middle Management Is Murder" pokes fun at everything from corporate politics to police procedure to the activist culture.
About the Author
A native Texan who boasted about setting his snakeskin boots down in all 50 states, Les Rich is a master wordsmith who judiciously weaves humor into the hard-core realities of the business world. After freelancing for business and general interest magazines, Rich donned the Texas-sized hat of a corporate communications director with several corporations formulating editorial strategy and authoring speeches for the CEOs. He co-authored with wife Joan Rich two books of satire during the 1960s: "How To Be a New Yorker, A Terribly Useful Guide" (Doubleday) and "Dating and Mating by Computer" (Ace Star). Other co-writing credits include Jeno Paulucc''s "How It Was to Make $100 Million in a Hurry" (1969) and most recently "Jeno--The Power of the Peddler" (2006). "Middle Management Is Murder" is Rich's first major work of fiction (not counting his previous speech writing efforts showcasing the financial "facts" of his corporate clients.) Regrettably, it is also his last. Rich lost his life in the battle against cancer in 2008.
