A U.S. government security chief who went to Mexico in advance of Obama's visit contracted the N1H1 virus -- but he has since recovered.
WASHINGTON, D.C., UNITED STATES (APRIL 30, 2009) NBC -
The White House reported on Thursday (April 30, 2009) that a
government employee who travelled to Mexico as part of the advance team for
U.S. President Barack Obama's recent trip there had become infected with the
N1H1 virus but has since recovered.
The individual, who was assigned to the chief of the security team of
Energy Secretary Steven Chu, never came within sufficient proximity of the
President to warrant concern about spread of the virus to Obama.
"This individual never flew on Air Force One. The individual
would have been at the working dinner on (Thursday the 16th). He was asked
specifically if he ever came within six feet of the president, and the answer
to that was no.," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.
The individual arrived in Mexico on April 13 and became ill three days
later. He developed a fever and returned to the United States. On April
19th, the individual visited his brother's home, and spread the virus to his
nephew. He returned to work at the Department of Energy and spread the virus
to one employee, who only developed flu-like symptoms but who tested negative
for the N1H1 virus. Over the next few days, the individual's wife and son
also became ill. He visited a physician, but received no medication. As the
symptoms of the wife, son and nephew became worse, they sought treatment at a
hospital and were tested as suffering a probable N1H1 infection. Based on his
travel history, the individual who accompanied the Energy Department
delegation to Mexico as part of the security detail was identified as the
carrier, but by that time he was feeling much better.
