Soul singer and songwriter John Legend helped Tommy Hilfiger
showcase some U.K. music talent as he performed with upcoming rockers The
Metros, Steve Appleton and Zarif at Porchester Hall on (September 22).
The Hilfiger Sessions, which started in Amsterdam, are a series of
music events, held by fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger (in partnership with
Sony BMG), which take place around the world to promote new acts as well as
showing well established musicians.
The night before the gig, Legend joined the likes of Annie Lennox, and
Peter Gabriel at London's Albert Hall for the 'Peace One Day' concert. Hosted
by Jude Law, the concert was part of the ongoing campaign started by filmmaker
Jeremy Gilley in 1999, which led to the UN adopting the first ever day of
global ceasefire on September 21.
This year, all parties in Afghanistan were to recognise the Peace Day
to allow UNICEF workers to safely carry out immunisation for more than a
million children in the country, although there were reports of insurgent
attacks across the country on the day of ceasefire.
Legend will return to the Albert Hall for a follow up concert on Friday
night, but said he also liked the smaller, more intimate experience that the
Hilfiger Sessions provided.
"I love it. I love playing small shows with the crowd right on top
of us. A lot of energy. I think it's going to be fun tonight the band's
excited everybody's excited, we're going to have fun tonight," he
said.
The Grammy winner also gave a glimpse of his new album, 'Evolver'.
Legend, who often works with other performers has collaborated with several
artists on his latest offering including Estelle, Will.I.Am, Kanye West, and
Andre 300 of Outkast - who features on the album's first single, 'Green
Light'.
"I have always worked with a lot of different people on each
album, just to get a different energy and different vibes, when I work with
people and I think this album's the best yet," Legend told Reuters.
As well as lending his talents to several projects like 'Peace One
Day', Legend has also thrown his weight behind US presidential hopeful, Barack
Obama's election campaign. On Monday, he was optimistic about Obama's
chances.
"I think we're going to win, which is good for everybody," he
said.
'Evolver' is is scheduled for release next month.
