Never-before-seen photos of Elvis Presley are rediscovered by famed
celebrity photographer George Kalinsky.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA

Elvis is Back!  Nearly one hundred newly-discovered photographs of
Elvis Presley are keeping "The King of Rock and Roll" alive in the
hearts of millions of his fans.  The photos were taken by famed photographer
George Kalinsky at Elvis' concert at Madison Square Garden in 1972.
One of the rediscovered Elvis photographs is the centrepiece of a
publicity campaign in New York City's Times Square.  The campaign also
includes photos of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Sinatra.  The Elvis photo covers a
massive three-story tall billboard and shows the iconic singer, actor and sex
symbol wearing his infamous flamboyant glittering white leisure suit with his
arms stretched out holding a cape.
George Kalinsky said the moment he snapped that picture, he knew it was
special.
"When I photograph any performer, regardless of how great or not
so great that performer is, I look to capture the moment that is most
important," he explained. "That one moment that we'll all remember.
I don't know what that moment is each time, but I look for it, and when it
happens, I just know it.  There is the charisma. There is the personality.
There is the insight, that you say 'This is a great moment.' And when Elvis
went like this at encore, I knew that it was the moment of the
night."
Kalinsky also says it is a dream for any photographer to see his work
in Times Square.  He says, "If you are a photographer, you want to be
shown in galleries like the Museum of Modern Art or the Metropolitan Museum.
Then you even dream further than that and you say 'Gee I'd like my photos
blown up in Times Square. That would be great.'  Well that's really a dream.
It happened, and somehow, this dream really came true."
Kalinsky says he rediscovered the unpublished photographs of Elvis
Presley after he was asked to provide pictures for the publicity campaign
called "Great Moments in New York".  When Kalinsky contacted Elvis
estate for permission to use the photos in the campaign, the estate asked for
any additional photographs.  The collection will be shown during an exhibit
called the "Lost Photos" at Elvis' Graceland mansion beginning in
May.  Elvis died at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee on August 16,
1977.
Kalinsky said, when taking a picture, his goal is to capture the
essence of each of his subjects.
"I guess looking back now, I say I was always interested in
people. I was interested in their personalities, and what makes up their
personalities? Well it's their hands, their eyes, their mouth, and those three
elements were always more important to me than a dunk shot," he told told
Reuters.
He added,  "I love what I do. I have the best job in the world.
Every night is a very special night for me because it's different and somebody
new, and even if it's not somebody new, I'm going to redo them in a different
way."
George Kalinsky is the official photographer for Madison Square Garden,
and for more than 40 years, he has taken photos of everybody who is anybody
including Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, Muhammad Ali, Madonna and even Pope
John Paul II.
