Car bomb explodes close to a police station in the winery region of La
Rioja after warning call from Basque Separatist group ETA.
CALAHORRA, SPAIN (MARCH 21, 2008)(LA RIOJA TV) -
A car bomb exploded on Friday (March 21) close to a Guardia Civil
police station in Calahorra, a town in the Rioja region of northern Spain
after a warning from Basque
separatist group ETA.
Media reported no serious casualties although some people, including a
policeman, may have been slightly hurt by flying glass.
ETA last struck on March 7, two days before a general election, when a
former Socialist Party councillor Isaias Carrasco was shot dead in the Basque
town of Mondragon.
State radio said a warning had been received from the Basque separatist
group ETA stating the location of the bomb and the make, model and colour of
the car.
State television said the warning had been received about 30 minutes
before the explosion.
After the explosion police ordered people to evacuate the area which was
crowded with
people attending a Holy Week religious procession.
ETA has killed more than 800 people in four decades in its fight for
independence for the Basque Country in northern Spain and southern France,
even though polls show most Basques do not want this.
