The Colombian army seizes a giant haul of marijuana, that is says belongs
to the leftist FARC guerrillas.
CALI, COLOMBIA (MARCH 11, 2008) (RCN TV) - The Colombian army took possession on Tuesday (March 11) of six tons
of marijuana it claims belonged to the FARC rebel group.
Some 400 kilometres (248 miles) northeast of the capital Bogota, in
Cali, troops from the Third Brigade moved in after a tip off to find rows and
rows of the marijuana pressed into blocks ready for export.
"After detecting a presence in the area, we exchanged fire in the
upper section of the Cominera (the local town). We had to deactivate two mine
fields and finally in the early hours of the morning, managed to get into the
site where the marijuana was hidden," said Ltd. Col. Diego Jose Guarin,
commander of the Eight Infantry Battalion.
Both Bogota and Washington brand the Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia, or FARC, as a terrorist group that funds its activities through the
drugs trade.
The army claimed that the six-ton capture was a blow to the sixth
quadrant of the FARC, that operates in the Cali region.
One person was detained during the raid, but no further details were
given at the time.
