The cast of "Under the Same Moon" premiered the festival favored
film about immigration, love and family in Los Angeles. The spanish language
film follows the story of an illegal immigrant working as a maid in Los
Angeles who leaves her child in Mexico to find a better life for them.
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES (MARCH 11, 2008) (REUTERS) - The cast of "Under the Same Moon" raved about the
feel-good tale of a young Mexican boy's odyssey to reunite with mother at the
film's premiere in Los Angeles, California on Tuesday (March 11).
"This movie talks about family," said Kate Del Castillo, who
portrays the mother Rosario. She continued, "About keeping the families
united and about this love, the most pure that could ever exist which is a mom
and son. "
Adrian Alonso stars as Carlitos, a Mexican adolescent living with his
grandmother while his mother works as a maid in the US, hoping someday to send
for her child. But when the grandmother dies unexpectedly, Carlitos must sneak
across the border and seek out his mother. The film features a supporting
performance by America Ferrara of the television show "Ugly
Betty".
"Yeah, when I was making the scene," Adrian Alonso told
Reuters, "I didn't know about her (America Ferrera) but I when I finished
the scene I said 'oh yeah' she is in 'beauty?' what's the name? 'Ugly Betty
yes 'Ugly Betty'."
The film premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival where it received a
standing-ovation and is the debut feature from director Patricia Riggen.
"The first thing I felt when I read the story was that it was a
story of love. In this case, between a mom and a little boy separated by the
border and the big questions how they find each other and will they? That is
the way the movie is constructed," said Riggen.
Rosario, the mother, had left son Carlitos in the care of his
grandmother when she left Mexico four years earlier, hoping to save enough
money to send for him quickly. But four years elapse, and when the grandmother
dies unexpectedly, the resourceful boy embarks on a dangerous trek to
California to find his mother.
The film shares the bond between mother and son that transcends
personal politics and stances on immigration law. "Under the Same
Moon" will be in limited release in the United States on March 19.
"I love this movie, it's a movie with a lot a heart," said
Eugenio Derbez, who portrays Enrique in the film. "Rarely do you find a
movie as special as 'Under the Same Moon' and I think it achieves it or at
least the director achieves it. It's a beautiful movie with a lot to
say."
