A 3.5 meter long fish is caught in the east coast of Taiwan, locals believe
it is a sign of an upcoming earthquake.
HUALIEN, TAIWAN (OCTOBER 8, 2008) FTV -
A 3.5 meter long fish was caught in the eastern coast of Taiwan on
Wednesday (October 8) by a local fisherman who believes it is a sign of an
upcoming earthquake.
According to local media reports, the fish is a member of the species
Regalecus glesne. It is known as the King of Herrings and is considered to be
the largest of the bony fish. It lives at great depths, up to depths of 1000
meters, making sightings rare.
The fish, nicknamed earthquake fish in Taiwan, or dragon king fish, has
a length more greater than that of a grown man. Professionals do not confirm
that sightings are signs of impending earthquakes.
Sixty-two-year-old Cheng Yi-bai, a fisherman for over 20 years, says he
has never seen anything like this catch.
"I released the string, and kept on pulling and pulling, but it
still struggled," said Cheng, who used Pacific saury as bait to attract
the big fish.
Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically
active stretch of the Pacific basin.
