Notes of Interest:
Valentine's Day searches have increased 564 percent over the past
week. This year, searches for Valentine's Day began to spike during
the week of Jan. 9, three weeks earlier than in previous years.
"If web search activity is any indication, expect to see a big
drop-off in animated Valentine's Day e-cards arriving in an email box
near you," said Dean Tsouvalas, writer of The Lycos 50. "Last year,
Valentine's e-cards were the number one most popular
Valentine's-related search with Lycos users, while this year, they
dropped 175 percent, falling completely off our top 10 list."
The most-searched Valentine's Day search query for 2006 was
Valentine's Day gift baskets, while flowers topped the list this year,
as the most popular Valentine's Day gift, generating four times more
search activity than chocolate, and twice as popular as jewelry.
"People also seem to be getting more creative in sending flowers to
their special Valentine this year," Tsouvalas continued. "Search
queries for sending flowers online jumped 401 percent over the past
three weeks. We also saw a huge increase in searches for flower seeds
and flower bulbs in association with Valentine's Day."
Meanwhile, searches for gifts for him dominate searches for gifts for
her again this year, generating 50 times more search activity. The
most popular Valentine's Day gifts for him include searches for:
watches, jewelry, cologne, poker toys and golf items.
And when it comes to love, searches for love poems outnumber all other
love-related searches nearly three to one. "We can't be sure if it's
the love poems pushing Britney and Kevin to the top of our Valentine's
Day list this year as the most-searched couple, or the never-ending
tabloid headlines, but Mr. and Mrs. Britney Spears continue to rock
the online world in search popularity," Tsouvalas added. "Britney and
Kevin generate four times more search activity than the next
most-searched couple, Eminem and Kim Mathers."
