Stocks Edge Lower Ahead of Greenspan
Robert Holmes
Stocks slipped Thursday as imminent testimony from Federal Reserve
Chairman Alan Greenspan sowed caution after a nearly 4% run-up on the
Nasdaq over the past week.
Comcast Trims Cash Flow Targets
Scott Moritz
Comcast posted a flat third quarter and trimmed full-year cash flow
guidance, citing costs related to its National Hockey League contract
and rising capital spending. The Philadelphia-based cable system
operator made $222 million, or a dime a share, for the quarter ended
Sept. 30, compared with $220 million, or 10 cents a share, a year
earlier.
SEC Short-Sale Probe Turns to Gryphon Fund
Matthew Goldstein
It's been a rough year on the regulatory front for the Dallas hedge
fund Gryphon Partners. In April, Jonathan Daws, a former Gryphon
portfolio manager, pleaded guilty in federal court to a conspiracy
charge arising from a scheme involving confidential information about
government investigations of publicly traded companies. Daws, who left
Gryphon in 2002, participated in a plot hatched by notorious
short-seller Anthony Elgindy that involved betting against companies
being probed, then driving down the stock prices by leaking the news
on the Internet. Now, sources say, Gryphon is one of several hedge
funds under scrutiny in another federal investigation.
Tech for Show, Energy for Dough
Nick Godt
A determined search party of intrepid market strategists has been
trying to figure out which is going to be the new market leader going
forward. Tech shares? Financials? Materials? The market, however,
seems to have already determined which sector would come to rescue the
fledging bounce off the five-month lows hit in late October.
The New American Cheese
Ana Dane
The fragrant, rich pungency of a washed-rind, the creamy bite of a
blue, the gentle sweetness of a sheep's milk ricotta -- all are types
of fabulous artisanal cheeses being produced right here in the U.S.
Long overshadowed by the venerable cheeses of Europe, domestic
artisanal cheeses are growing in popularity and variety. Judging by
the varieties we sampled at TheStreet.com, they well deserve the
spotlight. These cheeses have undergone a renaissance in the U.S., due
in part to the increased awareness of the local food concept and the
growing popularity of food media coverage.
Daily Investing Tip
Restrained Rally Slowly Emerging
Despite a not-quite-perfect floor, most of the elements are slowly
coming together to support at least a modest year-end rally. My
analysis suggests that traders and index buyers can get long over the
next few weeks, with a projected top in mid-December. What's the basis
for this? Here are my key positive factors.

Stars Align for a Run
The action suggests we've put in a low, and that it's no longer a wise
tact to sell the rallies.

A Busy Open House for Homestore
The real estate listings Web site has had strong growth that could
continue even if home sales slow.
