NHS hospital in Gateshead to pilot novel e-learning approach as part of

secure blood management system

GATESHEAD, UK, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - The Queen Elizabeth
Hospital in Gateshead is to pilot a new e-learning approach as part of
a sophisticated system that electronically controls and tracks the
movement of blood products into and out of hospital refrigerated
stores.

The Blood Track(TM) Courier system from Olympus, is designed to
improve blood transfusion safety by ensuring that the right blood is
given to the right patient. The world proven approach uses simple
technology to store, track and handle units of blood and to correctly
identify patients.

Nurses and porters at Queen Elizabeth Staff, who need to store and
withdraw blood from secure refrigerated kiosks, will be trained via
computer on the basic operation of the system and will also need to
demonstrate competency in actually using it in an everyday situation.
Olympus, together with Medify Solutions, has developed a novel
e-learning approach to train staff on the use of the Blood Track
Courier system.

The training ensures that staff pass a two part process: first they
complete a competence for work element, which allows them a half
certificate; secondly they are only allowed to use the system in a
live situation once they have completed the second part of the
training and successfully demonstrated practical competence to a
trained Hospital Assessor. At that time they are issued with their
unique computer ID to use the system and the second half of their
certificate denoting competence in work.

Colin Jefferson, Operations Head of Olympus Diagnostics said. "This is
an important step in closing the loop on blood management by ensuring
that the human element is monitored and controlled to assure greater
patient safety. Our aim is to help hospitals to ensure compliance with
clinical governance programmes in new and innovative ways"

Trevor Bone, Director of Medify Solutions, said, "I am very pleased
that we have now secured this initial contract to deliver e-learning
for this innovative system. I believe that the new joint service will
support hospital staff in a very positive way and contribute to
delivering better patient care."

The new service is planned to go live in Gateshead at the end of
November and Olympus are now working closely with Medify to eventually
deliver training and assessment for their suite of solutions, directly
to a PDA or other mobile device used by the caregiver to control and
administer the process.

In addition to delivering e-learning solutions via pocket PCs and
other mobile devices Medify is also working with other parts of the
NHS on a remote solution for the access of 'live data' patient notes
by GPs and other clinicians.
