NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 2005--GAIB Productions will present Joe Beck's new musical Saddam: The Musical, a madcap, screwball comedy about Saddam's failed efforts to resuscitate his marriage and emerge victorious from a raging mid-life crisis. Not to make light of this historic event, this fictional musical pokes fun at Saddam and his antics. Performances will be at The Drama Book Shop, 250 West 40th Street (between 7th and 8th avenues) and will begin Friday, October 21st.

Saddam: The Musical tells the inside story of how Saddam Hussein was an eager to please henpecked husband and relates the tale of Saddam's kidnapping of the world's greatest lyricists and songwriters to be the ghostwriters of Saddam's ultimate paean of love. As the walls of his palaces crumble about him, Saddam is obsessed with creating the one song that will both memorialize his musical genius and win back the heart of his first wife.

The author of Saddam: The Musical is Joe Beck, the author of four previous plays: Murderous Huntington, Don't Leave Tracks, A Birthday Party and Thanksgiving. Two of his plays won best new play awards. He is also the author of two non-fiction books The Ultimate Home and Property Maintenance Manual (McGraw-Hill 2005) and co-author of 100 Of The Greatest Inventions Of All Time (Citadel 2003) and hundreds of articles. He is currently working on his first novel Suburban Sins and his next play, Fuel. He is also a member of The Dramatists Guild and The Authors Guild.

Mr. Beck started writing this project two years ago. It began as a straight full-length play called Love and Missiles In The Sand. After a few rewrites the project was renamed Ruler Of Saddam. Finally, after auditioning Robert Kiernan (and casting him as our Saddam) and collaborating with him, the play was transformed into a musical entitled Saddam: The Musical.

The director of Saddam: The Musical is Robert Kiernan, who has directed many comedies, thrillers, musicals and children's shows and has acted, directed, produced and had a hand in over 400 shows in the last 40 years. Saddam: The Musical will begin performances on Friday, October 21st and the schedule will be as follows:

Friday, October 21st @ 8:00 PM
Saturday, October 22nd @ 8:00 PM
Sunday, October 23rd @ 3:00 PM
Friday, October 28th @ 8:00 PM
Saturday, October 29th @ 8:00 PM
Sunday, October 30th @ 3:00 PM

View Article  Experts Available to Discuss Study on Urban Poverty
--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ExpertSource:

TOPIC: A study shows the majority of the nation's poor are stuck in urban areas immersed in poverty, according to an article by The Associated Press. The study, released by the Brookings Institution, claims while public housing was concentrated in urban areas, new schools and jobs were developed in the suburbs, making it difficult for people living in poverty to gain access to opportunities to better their economic situations. Atlanta has taken steps to do away with the city's areas of concentrated poverty by developing mixed-income neighborhoods in their place.

EXPERTS: ExpertSource can offer several highly qualified experts to comment on this story:

Joel John Roberts is the chief executive officer of People Assisting the Homeless (P.A.T.H.). It has become a region-wide agency serving homeless people throughout Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Hollywood and the Antelope Valley. He is a member of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority Advisory Board, chair of the Spa 4 Metro West Coalition, executive board member of the Westside Hunger and Shelter Coalition, advisory board member of the Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team and a Fellow of the Zero Divide Initiative. While attending California State University, Long Beach, he traveled throughout Asia and Africa witnessing poverty and hunger in many countries, unforgettable images that steered him to serving the poor. P.A.T.H. was founded in 1984 in West Los Angeles through a coalition of churches, temples, businesses and community leaders who sought a solution to help homeless people. Rather than establish a soup kitchen or food giveaway program, this group created P.A.T.H., a program to offer homeless people a hand up, not a hand out. Today a multitude of programs help homeless people find work, save money, secure housing, and empower their lives. Roberts has also written the book "How To Increase Homelessness," which highlights the absurd phenomenon of homelessness and takes the debate to an ironically new level. The satiric, practical handbook guides readers through one of society's most difficult and divisive problems and provides hopeful insights and tools for ending homelessness. Loyal Publishing published the book in October 2004. PR Contact: Chris Northrup, 310-836-4381, chris@bjrpr.com

Dr. Merrill Vargo, executive director of Springboard Schools, is both an experienced academic and a practical expert in the field of school reform. Before founding Springboard Schools as the Bay Area School Reform Collaborative (BASRC) in January 1995, Dr. Vargo spent nine years teaching English in a variety of settings, managed her own consulting firm, and served as executive director of the California Institute for School Improvement, a Sacramento-based nonprofit that provides staff development and policy analysis for educators. Dr. Vargo served as Director of Regional Programs and Special Programs and Special Projects for the California Department of Education, where she provided leadership to several key school reform efforts, including the SB 1274 School Restructuring Initiative, Charter Schools, Goals 2000 and the School Improvement Program. Dr. Vargo's experience at the helm of Springboard Schools places her in the top ranks of the nation's school reformers. Hand-picked by an elite group of Bay Area educators and philanthropists to create BASRC (now Springboard Schools), one of nine urban school reform initiatives funded by the Philadelphia-based Annenberg Foundation, she is one of only two executive directors to have survived the politics and vicissitudes of the reform process for the duration of the "Annenberg Challenge." Under Dr. Vargo's leadership, BASRC became one of only four of the 19 Challenge sites to show achievement strong enough to win renewed grants from its original funders, the Annenberg Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation of Menlo Park, California. The Hewlett Foundation is the largest donor to Springboard Schools, and it was the largest single donor in matching grants for the Annenberg Challenge. A tireless advocate for learning as central to the human experience and for public schools as the cornerstone of democracy, Dr. Vargo consistently champions the needs of children including children growing up in poverty, children of color, and English Language Learners. A former teacher of English and an impassioned advocate for both standards and inspiring teaching, she has been both a student and a teacher in a variety of innovative programs and settings. Dr. Vargo is a product of the public school system and received her BA and Ph.D. in English literature as part of Cornell University's Ford Foundation-funded "Six Year PhD Program." She began her teaching career as part of the interdisciplinary "Freshman Honors Program" at the University of Delaware, a program that set out to serve bright high-school age students in a university setting. She also taught for three years at Deep Springs College, one of nation's oldest and most successful "small schools." Deep Springs students - all 24 of them -- spend two years studying liberal arts courses while operating both the college and a high-desert cattle ranch. View Article  EA and Steven Spielberg Team Up to Develop Three Original Videogames
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 2005--In a ground-breaking long term agreement, Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) today announced that Academy Award(R) winner Steven Spielberg will be collaborating with the game makers at EA's Los Angeles studio (EALA) to create three new original franchise properties. Beginning this year, with offices located on site at EALA, Spielberg will work directly with EA's development teams to offer his signature style of storytelling to the concept, design, story and artistic visualization of the new games. EA will own the intellectual properties and the game franchises will be developed, published and distributed worldwide by EA. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"I have been playing EA games for years and have watched them master the interactive format," said Steven Spielberg. "Having watched the game industry grow from a niche into a major creative force in entertainment, I have a great deal of respect for EA's understanding of the interactive format. I'm looking forward to working closely with the team in Los Angeles."

"There is no greater storyteller than Steven Spielberg," said EA Chairman and CEO Larry Probst. "In addition to his gift for pleasing movie audiences, he has an innate understanding of games and how to immerse players into a fantastic world of action and characters."

"It's incredibly exciting to be collaborating with Steven Spielberg," noted Neil Young, VP and Studio Head at EALA. "He shares our vision for the potential of the medium and has the passion and creativity to help us finally deliver on the promise that a game can not only engage and compel you with its interactivity, but can also move you emotionally."

The mission at EALA is to be the definitive creative destination for game makers and game development in Southern California. It is home to the award-winning Medal of Honor(TM), Command & Conquer(TM) and The Lord of the Rings(TM) franchises. EALA drives innovation in technology, art and game design by employing a first-class studio of game-makers at its campus in Playa Vista, CA. The studio is also home to EA's Worldwide Music and Music Marketing group and EA Mobile.

View Article  Steven Spielberg To Collaborate with EA Games

No, Steven, "The Goonies" cannot be one of the three games

By JOHN PACZKOWSKI
Steven Spielberg's new project requires a different kind of screen -- a computer monitor. The Academy-Award winning film director has inked a long-term agreement with Electronic Arts to develop three original video games. An interesting bit of convergence, this -- a Hollywood A-lister teaming with the world's largest video game publisher. Certainly, EA has high hopes for the alliance. "[Steven] really wants to make sure each of these products has at least one really meaningful innovation that nobody has ever seen before," said Neil Young, general manager and vice president for EA's studio in Playa Vista. "It would be akin to 'Jurassic Park' as a film. Nobody had seen dinosaurs moving that way before. That innovation added so much dimensionality to that film. ...We're trying to answer the question: Can a computer game make you cry? Partnering with Steven, we're going to get closer to answering it, and maybe we'll answer it together."

"A good movie will bring you inside of itself just by the sheer brilliance of the director/writer/production staff. But in the future, you will physically be inside the experience, which will surround you top, bottom, on all sides. ... I've invented it, but because patent is pending, I can't discuss it right now."

View Article  Subsription Musis service For Students

By "anonymous donor," you mean Jerry Yang and David Filo, right?
Stanford University students needn't worry themselves about the potential legal ramifications of free music downloaded from the Internet, at least for the next year. On Wednesday, Yahoo said it will offer its subscription music service to all Stanford students (except Mac users) free for a year in a deal paid for by an "anonymous donor." At the conclusion of the yearlong trial, which is to begin next Tuesday, students will be offered the chance to subscribe to the service for between $1.75 and $4.75 a month. The agreement is the first of its kind for Yahoo, which has looked on quietly while Napster inked deals with Pennsylvania State University and University of Washington, though under more dubious terms (see " Hey, how about a nice beer service? College students like beer too.").
