BOSTON, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Are you in debt? Squander your children's college fund on risky stocks? Buy a new 50" plasma for a condo that you can't pay the mortgage on? Open a fourth credit card when you're late on the first three? Surprisingly, while many people will share intimate details of their lives at dinner parties, one subject has remained taboo: personal finances. To help get those financial transgressions off your chest, web 2.0 personal finance leader Geezeo introduced Money Confessions.
Money Confessions give people a forum to get their financial bloopers, scandals and sob-stories out in the open. Users can confess publicly or, more commonly, post their sins anonymously. Geezeo's Money Confessions, launched just last month, have quickly become a popular feature at the social finance site.
"A lot of people hide from their finances. They don't open bills, they lie about how much money they make, they refuse to deal with what's happening. Simply getting some this stuff out there is a great way to come to terms with your situation," says Geezeo's Social Marketing Manager, Ruthann DeGuitis. "Budgeting, just like dieting or any other self-improvement project, requires that you come to terms with your situation."
Below are some examples of Money Confessions (http://www.geezeo.com/confessions):
"I maxed out my credit cards. Again. I blew the last of my cash at the bars last night. I had cereal with water instead of milk for breakfast."
"I have a considerable bonus coming and I'm spending it before it's deposited on Friday. I was going to use it for debt repayment. I'm sick."
"I just found out that my Mother took out a $34,000 student loan without my knowledge. I'll be paying that off for 30 years."
"Geezeo confessions have really taken off," adds Director of Content Katie McCasky. "It's a fun way to talk about things you wouldn't normally bring up off-line. We have had a lot of users tell how good it feels to know there are people out there who are a lot worse off than they are."
