A chocolate copy of a faberge egg, worth 5,000 pounds, goes on display in
London.
LONDON, ENGLAND, UK (MARCH 17, 2008) (REUTERS) - One metre-high and worth 5,000 pounds, this is no ordinary easter
egg.
Created by celebrity pastry chef Beate Woellstein, this chocolate copy
of the famous 'Imperial Napoleonic' faberge egg commissioned by Russian Tsar
Nicholas II, went on display at a London hotel on Monday (March 17).
Woellstein, who has made cakes for celebrities like George Clooney, Tom
Cruise and Madonna, spent 70 hours making the intricate egg out of 30 kg of
chocolate.
The original -- made from yellow gold, emeralds, rubies and diamonds --
was one of only 52 jewelled eggs made by Peter Carl Faberge.
Woellstein said the hardest part of the process was recreating the
luxurious details of the original, with piped chocolate, silver leaf and sufar
crystals.
"The most difficult thing was for me was how to produce all the
little ornaments on it. But...to plan all the product from very much the
beginning, till yesterday night I was working on the piece, without any
breakage, and I'm quite surprised as well about the fantastic outcome,"
she said.
The egg will be on display at Grosvenor House until Friday March
28th.
