Turkey launches an investigation to find out why 13 babies have died in a
hospital over the weekend.
(EU) IZMIR, TURKEY (SEPTEMBER 21, 2008) CHA -
Turkish prosecutors have launched an investigation after 13 new-born
babies died in 24 hours in a state hospital in the western city of Izmir,
Anatolian state news agency said on Monday (September 22).
It was the second case in two months of a large number of babies dying
after birth that has raised concerns over standards of new-born units in the
European Union candidate country.
Media reports said the babies, all born prematurely, died over the
weekend, possibly from an infection, at Tepecik hospital in Izmir, Turkey's
third-largest city.
Mehmet Ozkan, the head of the local health directorate, said at least
one baby had died.
"12 babies died in nearly one day and, from Sunday morning to
today, only one baby has lost his life," said Ozkan.
The hospital is under quarantine. No more babies are being admitted
into the centre, Anatolian said.
Zemian Ozkan was surprised to find out how quickly his daughter died.
"On Saturday night, the baby was sick at around 01:30, and then we
were informed that the baby died," said Ozkan.
In August, more than two dozen babies died in a hospital in Ankara.
