The Dimension 3D Printing Group, a business unit of Stratasys, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSYS), announced today winners of its second annual "Extreme Redesign: The 3D Printing Challenge," a global design and 3D printing contest for high school and college students.

First place winners traveled to an awards ceremony prior to the opening keynote address at the National Design Engineering Show (NDES) part of National Manufacturing Week 2006, in Chicago on Monday, March 20, at 4
p.m., and be honored with $2,500 scholarships; runners-up received $1,000 scholarships. In addition, teachers of first place winners and the teacher with the most student entries overall received a Dell laptop computer for their efforts encouraging student participation in this year's contest. Winning designs were unveiled at the Dimension 3D Printing booth #17050 at NDES on Tuesday, March 21, at 10:30

"I was very impressed by the number of unique and innovative designs submitted by the students. As a designer and engineer, it is exciting to see the high level of talent displayed by our next generation of designers. It was evident that many of them had put a lot of thought into their designs," said contest judge Scott Schermer, senior rapid prototyping specialist R&D,
S.C. Johnson.
The contest called for computer-aided-design (CAD) students to submit their most creative, useful and innovative Extreme Redesigns -- anything from a new perspective on an everyday product to a fresh vision for updating a famous piece of art, animation or architecture -- to
www.dimensionprinting.com. Students submitted a .stl file along with a 200-word description of the value and benefit of the Extreme Redesign part. Dimension then sent entrants a 3D print of their redesigns to hold in their hands and evaluate. From there, students had the opportunity to make any necessary design improvements and develop a second iteration for final submission.
"We were extremely excited not only with the vast number of pioneering student design entries we received, but also with the overall quality, ingenuity and creativity evident in the designs," said Jon Cobb, vice president and general manager of 3D printing for Stratasys. "This year's contest fulfilled its goal of giving students around the world an opportunity to be challenged and inspired, and we're pleased to honor these students with scholarships to help them further their education to become tomorrow's engineers, artists and inventors. Based on this year's popularity and success, we look forward to an even bigger contest in 2006."
Dimension's "Extreme Redesign" student design contest is sponsored by media partner Product Design & Development and the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).
