Microsoft Windows Defect Poised to Cause Wide-Ranging Attacks;
Security Expert from CBE Technologies' FireTower Division Offers
Advise on How Organizations Can Secure Systems from Remote Web Site
Hacks

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 2006--Today the simple act of
visiting a web site can compromise your computer, even if you are
working behind a firewall. The cause of the most recent threat is a
newly discovered vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Metafile files
(".wmf") that impacts how your windows handles graphics files. Attacks
that exploit this weakness allow the attacker to execute commands on
the victim's computer without their knowledge, compromising valuable
data. This attack can be triggered automatically when using Internet
Explorer to visit a web site or when viewing or previewing graphic
images using Microsoft Windows.

CBE Technologies, the Boston-based IT services firm, is aware of
companies being impacted by attacks which exploit this vulnerability.
Chris Doggett, senior vice president of FireTower, CBE Technologies'
information security division, offers the following tips to
organizations that want to protect their computers and their contents
from the WMF defect and other security threats:

-- Download Microsoft's newly released fix that is available at
www.microsoft.com/athome/security/update/bulletins/200601_WMF.mspx

-- Do not open, save, or preview any images, files, folders, email, or
websites that are not from trusted sources.

-- Run and at least weekly update antivirus, antispam, intrusion
protection, antispyware, and firewall software.

-- Use the automatic update feature available for Microsoft Windows
and the Microsoft applications you run.

-- Regularly back up your computer files so that you can rescue your
important information should your computer fail.

Mr. Doggett is available for commentary on the Microsoft vulnerability
and other IT security issues.
