Australian man creates daredevil stunts with half a million volts of
electricity - just for fun.
BUNBURY, WESTERN AUSTRALIA NETWORK NINE -
Many would recoil at the thought of playing with lightning.
But for Peter Terren from Bunbury in Western Australia, it's a fun
daily activity.
A doctor by trade, Terren gets his zaps from conducting large volts of
electricity in all forms, creating spectacular shows in his backyard.
He's dubbed his art 'elec-trickery'.
Terren manages half a million volts at a time, conducting it between
anything metal - including a metal cage with him inside it.
He also uses a homemade Tesla coil which acts as a giant lightning
machine, creating long volts of electricity that light up the night sky.
Terren says he loves the loud noise and impressive look of the
electricity and was interested in physics from a young age.
"This all started when I was a child. I built my first radio at
the age of 12 and I've sort of gradually built up from there," he said.
Terren says the daredevil stunts are not for the faint-hearted and are
extremely dangerous.
"It is very dangerous. The base of the Tesla coil is completely
lethal. The big sparks are going to be incapacitating - may well be lethal as
well,"
He takes precautions though -- his hat may be stylish, but it is also
an important insulator for his head.
"I'm very careful. I've been doing this for 50 years and I intend
to be doing it for some time yet."
Terren's family say they are happy with him playing with with
electricity -- except when it interferes with the television reception.
Terren builds his electricity gadgets from junk and scraps using his
knowledge built up over 40 years, local media reported.
He says he is frequently asked for information on how to re-create his
experiments, but is reluctant to provide it given the extreme danger involved.
