Former Chelsea manager takes over vacant Inter Milan post after Roberto
Mancini is sacked.
SETUBAL, PORTUGAL)(RECENT MAY 2008) REUTERS -
Jose Mourinho has been appointed coach of Inter Milan, the Italian
champions said on Monday (June 2).
Former Chelsea and Porto boss Mourinho succeeds Roberto Mancini, whose
dismissal was confirmed on Thursday, 11 days after he led the side to their
third consecutive Serie A title.
Mancini had meetings with Inter President Massimo Moratti before his
departure, and Italian newspapers are suggesting one of the reasons for
Mancini's departure could be the early exit of Inter in the Champions
League.
Mourinho won the Champions League for Porto and then moved to Chelsea
where he delivered the club's best results for years with the Premier League
title two years running. But Mourinho did not win the Champions League for his
boss, billionaire Roman Abramovich, and was sacked in September 2007 to be
replaced by Avram Grant. Grant managed to get to this year's final of the
Champions League but was immediately sacked at the end of May for also failing
to return with the trophy.
Since 2007 Mourinho has turned down other jobs, saying he would not
rush into a new post. Recently he refereed a charity match between veteran
players of Setubal and Benfica in his home town of Setubal.
