LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Findings from Precision Opinion Monthly Telephone Omnibus:
- In total 28.8% of the respondents have an area within a mile of their home where they would be afraid to walk alone at night
- Almost 29% of all respondents, regardless of race, state there is an area within a mile of their homes where they would be afraid to walk alone at night. Moreover, city dwellers are almost twice as likely to have a "fear zone" than rural residents (38.9% vs. 20.8%). 27% of Suburbanites report to having a "fear-zone" within a mile of their home.
- 40.2% of the respondent's state there is MORE crime in their state than there was a year ago.
- Crime is seen as being on the rise in all three major residential divisions with the 44.9% of city dwellers, 40.9% of rural and 34.5% suburbanites. Blacks see themselves as hardest hit in the rise of crime with 58.2% seeing an increase versus 38.7% for Whites and 37% for Hispanics.
- Blacks (40.5%) and Hispanics (39.1%) are more likely to have an area within a mile of their home where they would be afraid versus 27.3% for Whites.
- Safest place to be is home sweet home. Overall 92.8% of America feels safe at home at night.
- Overall 40.1% of adults claim the single factor most responsible for crime no matter one's race or one's place of residence is drugs with 40.1%. Other factors rank as follows:
- Breakdown family values = 18.1%
- Unemployment = 6.8%
- Television Violence = 6.5%
The Precision Opinion American Tracking Survey was conducted the last two weeks of November 2007 with 1002 adults 18 years of age and older. The methodology was random digit dial conducted from Precision Opinion 's phone center in Las Vegas, NV. The total margin of error +/- 3.1% at a 95% confidence level.
