Asian Governments Test Synbiotics' Flu DETECT(TM) Test Strip;
Thailand, Vietnam Report Fast-Acting, Sensitive Results in Testing for
H5N1 Subtype of Avian Influenza a Virus
SAN DIEGO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 2006--Evaluations by
national animal health agencies in Thailand and Vietnam found
Synbiotics Corp.'s Flu DETECT(TM) antigen test kit to be fast-acting
and highly sensitive in testing for the H5N1 subtype of Avian
Influenza Type A virus that has spread through poultry flocks and wild
birds in Asia. Government and independent laboratories in Australia,
Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the United States also are conducting
ongoing evaluations of the test, Synbiotics announced.
Flu DETECT, launched in spring 2005 at VIV Asia in Bangkok, detects
all 16 sub-types of Avian Influenza Type A and can be used in the
laboratory or on the farm. The fast-acting and sensitive Flu DETECT
technology helps farmers, veterinarians and government health
officials implement proper control measures, manage disease and
ultimately reduce the economic loss associated with H5N1. This disease
is highly pathogenic and causes severe disease and death in poultry.
In rare cases, it has been transmitted from birds to humans.
The National Institute of Animal Health in Thailand reported that Flu
DETECT is "easy to use" and provides quick results. A test by the
Department of Animal Health in Vietnam noted Flu DETECT's "high
specificity" to the H5N1 subtype of Avian Influenza Type A and its
sensitivity in samples with an extremely small amount of the virus.
Synbiotics' research shows this test may be 10 to 1,000 times more
sensitive than other commonly used antigen test kits. In addition, it
can detect all subtypes of Avian Influenza Virus Type A particles with
a low virus load and provides results in just 15 minutes. The Flu
DETECT kit is economical and easy to use in the laboratory or on the
farm.
"The primary means of controlling Avian Influenza is through active
surveillance, rapid detection and elimination of infected flocks,"
said Paul Hays, Synbiotics' chief executive officer. "Flu DETECT is
the reliable and economic way for poultry producers and governments to
quickly identify and combat this economically devastating disease."
Synbiotics is marketing Flu DETECT in Asia, the Middle East, Oceania,
Latin America and Europe. The company has received conditional
approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to market the product
in the United States.
In addition to FLU DETECT, Synbiotics offers ProFLOK(R) AIV +, a
USDA-approved laboratory test that detects the presence of Avian
Influenza Type A virus antibodies in serum. ProFLOK AIV + ELISA
methodology has been endorsed in the United States by the National
Poultry Improvement Plan, a cooperative program of federal and state
governments and the U.S. poultry industry to improve poultry and
poultry products through the use of new technology.
Synbiotics Corp. develops, manufactures and markets veterinary
diagnostics, instrumentation and related products for the companion
animal, large animal and poultry markets worldwide. Headquartered in
San Diego, Calif., Synbiotics manufactures and distributes its
products through its operations in San Diego and Lyon, France. For
