LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES (JUNE 16, 2008) REUTERS -
With the sun shining, and the summer heat on, celebrities
turned out in Los Angeles for the premiere of the film "Get Smart."
The film, which is an adaptation of the 1960s television series of the same
name, stars Steve Carrell as Maxwell Smart
On hand were the stars of the film, Steve Carrell, who plays the role of
Maxwell Smart, as well as his co-stars Anne Hathaway, Dwayne "The
Rock" Johnson, Alan Arkin, and Ken Davidian.
Carrell, who has stepped out of the office and into the field with this
new role, says that he always knew what his true calling really was.
"I wasnt so sure that I'd ever ammount to much comedically but I
always knew I'd be an action hero," Carrell told Reuters. "That was
just something that was predetermined for me."
"Get Smart" is the big screen adaptation of a television
series which aired form 1965 to 1970, and starred Don Adams as the hapless
Maxwell Smart, a secret agent working for C.O.N.T.R.O.L. and out to save the
world from the evil organization K.A.O.S.
Carrell, who carried a handheld fan with him to combat the heat while
walking the red carpet, told Reuters that in preparing to play Maxwell Smart
he wanted to honor the original, and not necessarily impersonate it.
"I didn't want to do an impression of Don Adams," says
Carrell, "I think his version of Maxwell smart was so singular, and it
was nothing that I could improve upon, much in the same way when they took the
British version of the office to the states, I didn't want to do a Ricky
Gervais impression because he did that perfectly. So what I tried to do was
take an essence of what Don Adams did and reinterpret it. I thought that would
be the best tribute to him."
The film isnt an exact replica of the series though. While it does
manages to stay true to the original material, it did have to be updated to
appeal to younger viewers who may have never seen the series, and to fit into
a more modern world.
Anne Hathaway, who stars as the beautiful and briliant Agent 99, says
she took this into account when figuring out how to play he character.
"I wanted to definitely always reference and be in the same arena
as the original 99, but the world is so different, and the role for women
especially has changed so much that I had to honor both at the same
time."
The film also features Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a. The Rock, who said what
drew him to the film was the humor, and the talent attached.
"The material was funny, number one, when I read it, and number
two, working with Pete Segal. I love Pete's movies from "Tommy Boy"
to "Fifty First Dates," and of course I love carrel, and both those
guys were attached. They were the only two attached at that time when I came
onboard. So it was a very easy decision to make. Sign me up. Where do we play?
Lets go."
"Get Smart" opens on June 20.
