Japanese motor manufacturers Honda halt production at its British factory,
halving the salary of workers.
SWINDON, WILTSHIRE, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM VNR -
Car giant Honda is to halt production at its British factory for a
further two months, it was announced on Friday (January 16).
The Japanese firm had already decided to stop production at its Swindon
site in February and March, but that will now be extended into April and May.
Honda is taking the action because the European motor market is not showing
any signs of recovery.
The firm said there were no plans for redundancies among its 4,200
workforce at the site.
Honda said it plans to cut domestic output by an additional 56,000
units to 1.168 million units in the year to March, as the global economy
rapidly deteriorates.
The new production outlook is down from an initial plan in April for
1.31 million units.
The announcement has been met with dismay by Unite, Britain's biggest
union who said workers faced a 50 percent cut in wages.
