2006: San Diego's Most Populated Industries And
Occupations

The United States Census Bureau recently released data about
the economic characteristics of various communities in the
United States. The data was reported in the Bureau's annual
American Community Survey report.
One area of focus in the report was the number of people in
various industries within San Diego County. Overall, the ACS
Report indicated that San Diego County had a population of
about 2,824,259. Of the total population, 1,400,199 are men and
1,424,060 women.
Top 13 Industries
Listed below is a ranking of the number of people in the top 13
industries in San Diego County (excluding military personnel).
This ranking only includes individuals who were 16 years or
older and employed at the time of survey (1,305,125 people).
13. Educational services, and health care, and social
assistance (245,571 people).
12. Professional, scientific, and management, and
administrative and waste management services (184,072 people).
11. Retail trade (144,900 people).
10. Arts, entertainment, and recreation, and accommodation, and
food services (130,518 people).
9. Manufacturing (125,089 people).
8. Finance and insurance, and real estate and rental and
leasing (105,929 people).
7. Construction (100,355 people).
6. Public administration (76,801 people).
5. Other services, except public administration (65,112
people).
4. Wholesale trade (42,078 people).
3. Transportation and warehousing, and utilities (41,670
people).
2. Information (33,570 people).
1. Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, and mining
(9,460 people).
Top 6 Occupations
Listed below is a ranking of the number of people in the top 6
occupations in San Diego County (excluding military personnel).
This ranking only includes individuals who were 16 years or
older and employed at the time of survey (1,305,125 people).
6. Management, professional, and related occupations (516,138
people).
5. Sales and office occupations (334,561 people).
4. Service occupations (221,933 people).
3. Construction, extraction, maintenance and repair occupations
(120,693 people).
2. Production, transportation, and material moving occupations
(104,986 people).
1. Farming, fishing, and forestry occupations (6,814 people).
As noted above, the rankings only include the civilian
population. Moreover, specifically excluded were people living
in institutions, school dormitories, or other group housing.
