So Be It
Julie Jordan Scott
"People are eternally divided into two classes,
the believer, builder, and praiser, and
the unbeliever, destroyer and critic."
John Ruskin
I remember sitting across from another woman - her
name was Sharon and I was helping her to do something
which seemed incredibly pertinent at the time. sorting
disks into boxes or something like that - as I
was being trained to increase Sharon's accomplishment
levels.
Sharon, you see, was severely developmentally
disabled and my job was. while I can't remember
its title, was to love and care for her. I had the
privilege to help make her life at the place
I worked (and she lived) as pleasant as possible.
All the stuff you take for granted, taking your
shower, getting dressed, blow drying your hair,
brushing your teeth, and being able to sort disks
into boxes - I helped Sharon with all of that.
I remember the extra bonus of that job was
simply loving Sharon. Of getting close to her,
treating her like a loving family member. Of
loving and respecting all the folks I had
the privilege to care for without judging
them or questioning their specialness or
making them any "less than" me.
I remember my trainer watching me and saying
she had never seen someone with such a high
ratio of positive praise to refocusing prompts.
Sharon thrived.
Now that I remember it, I did, too.
John Ruskin said, "People are eternally divided
into two classes, the believer, builder, and
praiser, and the unbeliever, destroyer and critic."
Sharon and I flourished when we believed, when
we built, when we praised.
Recently my friend Dan chose to criticize me.
I suppose he meant to be constructive, but it
was at a time when I was feeling low and "less
than" before he even started spurting his
advice at me.
What did that do for our friendship? It took
what was growing in a positive direction and
yanked it back.
His criticism destroyed the upward flow. It
might grow back. and it might wilt and die.
What would you rather be remembered as - a
believer, builder and praiser or an unbeliever,
a destroyer and a critic?
So Become that choice.
So Be It.
