Another Word for Home
Julie Jordan Scott
The car was completely dark except for the slightly
eerie glow of the dashboard monitors Outside our
warm little shelter it was very, very dark. There
were very few other cars traveling so it felt as
if we were the only four people in the world.
My cell phone rang its jazz music into the space
and all four of us jumped simultaneously.
It was like being on a space ship and having a
far-away-foreign-land send word of news that was
slightly significant but somehow also very
far removed.
I spoke excitedly to my friend on the
other-end-of-the-space-ship line. We hung up
and the entire car erupted in laughter. "That
was so funny!" said Katherine.
"I was scared! I didn't expect the phone to
ring out here in 'No Man's Land'" said Emma.
"Why is 'No Man's Land' so big!"
It must have been my over-all tiredness that
brought out this "brilliant" response.
"It's like this, Emma. Between somewhere and
somewhere, there is always nowhere. Right now?
We are in nowhere, on our way to somewhere."
I felt as if I had just uttered a very profound
statement until Emma started making up (and
singing) a song about "No Man's Land" to the
tune of "On Broadway."
She did it, in one precious moment, out brillianced
my supposed brilliance.
It was about an hour later that we arrived
on the outskirts of Needles, California, which
was where I wanted to stop for the night.
Right at Sam's eye level was a very familiar
red and yellow billboard. Sam cried out, "Home!"
I focused on the object of Sam's excitement
and recognized the logo for McDonald's.
The car erupted in laughter again.
"Home?"
"HOME!" said Sam. I pulled into the drive-way
for the hotel and was greeted by David, the
world's friendliest hotel employee (or
possibly owner) that I have ever met. For
a brief moment I considered making this place
our permanent residence. All of a sudden our
destination faded from view.
David was so sunshiney, he made this place
in Needles seem like paradise.
Paradise, simply another word for Home.
