Unique is Beautiful

It was a serene moment amidst a hectic
Saturday. Emma, Sam and I took a slice
of our day and headed to Hart Park
to feed the ducks.

This is a Jordan-Family-Must-Do ritual.
I spent many days with Katherine at Hart
Park back when I was living a more
conventional life. I loved every minute
out there, even chasing the geese with
deep rooted passion. My children would
laugh as I shooed the geese away with
a Mama-Bear ferocity.

I remember paddling into the middle of the
lake with Bianca and Katherine. We were
feeding the ducks and the dreaded Geese
approached, honking their food-love-call.

I yelped and paddled wildly.

Bianca nearly had her ankle moved out of
joint by my passionate peddling.

This Saturday was different.

Even the geese were peaceful.

There was a wide variety of water-birds,
some very unfamiliar to me.

They must be ducks on their annual
journey from one home to another.
They are traveling ducks, possibly
geese on pilgrimage.

Emma and I took a liking to a goose
of some sort with an odd shriveled up
face. A boy and a girl walked by. They
laughed and pointed at the bird. "That one
would definitely be the ugly duckling."

I felt my feelings rise up and watched
Emma's face as I spoke to the children.
"I don't think it is ugly. I think it is
unique. It is one of my favorites."

The children looked at me, expressionless.
They walked away.

We made our way to a playground. Emma
said, "I didn't like it when those children
called that duck ugly. It isn't nice. That
duck IS unique. I like it."

"Me too," I said, smiling into the beautiful
face of my little girl.

Unique is beautiful. Remember that.
